Winner – The Royal Oak, Marlow

Alford Arms

'Oh yes please! There is a world of difference between catering for an allergy with something like a salad, or roast with no gravy, and coming up with a delicious sounding dish that meets multiple needs without compromise on flavour. The Royal Oak hits the nail on the head.

Despite visiting at a very busy Sunday lunchtime, the staff were accommodating and unphased by our special diets (and paid particularly nice attention to our energetic toddler). We felt very relaxed and had THE BEST roast dinner I have had in a long time. Delicious rich gravy, large crispy potatoes and fresh vegetables with interesting touches. The range of starters and desserts was tempting beyond words, but portions were too huge for us to do the menu justice.'

Highly Commended

The Horse & Jockey, Curbridge, Hants

Horse & Jockey

'A friendly local pub with a fairly standard pub menu which included some really delicious fish and some yummy desserts. A dairy-free Eton mess which tasted better than the dairy filled one! The staff were extremely friendly, knowledgeable and interested – one of the waitresses mentioned that they had just had more allergen training and had been learning about the more unusual allergens. I felt very safe and had an excellent – and very good value - meal.'

The Ship Inn, Downham Market

'A totally gluten-free pub and restaurant where the staff are so proud of what they do – a real find. They make gluten-free bread on site plus their own gf versions of proper pub grub including fish and chips, burgers, onion rings and pies. The gf garlic bread was so good that I did not believe that it could be gluten free.

Because the whole menu is gluten free there is a huge gf choice but they will happily cater for whatever other combination of allergens that are needed. Ideally they would like to know in advance so that they can create a mini menu. Drinks include gluten-free beers and there are an excellent range of desserts. Really good value for money and excellent, 'safe', home made food.'

Commended

The Duke at Bratton, Westbury

‘A friendly, welcoming, country pub. A , family-run concern where they have made a huge effort to provide a safe, enjoyable dining experience for those with special dietary needs. Couldn't fault their positivity and enthusiasm and their attempts to be inclusive with food. The pub is strong on gluten-free and nut-free options, and they also offer egg-free and lactose-free dishes too.

The menu was clearly marked with gf options and the chef is keen to help tailor meals to specific requirements. There was a choice of 2 gluten-free beers at the bar. The menu is traditional and best for meat-eaters, less good for those wanting fish or vegetarian food. The portions were generous and the meals reasonably priced but, in gastronomic terms, did not quite live up to their very high allergen control standards.'
