Judges comments - July/August 2017

'They were extremely welcoming indeed. I had called in advance of my visit to a) book the table and b) to say that I was coeliac but also had a my nut allergy. They clearly had a record of this on the reservation / booking system. When we arrived, the person who greeted us, mentioned my nut allergy and presented me with the allergy list as we approached the table, meaning I had it from the beginning.'

'The whole menu is gluten free and also free from some slightly more obscure allergens: lupin, sulphites and mustard. There is only one dish (a dessert) containing peanuts. The menu is set out both as individual dishes to choose as you wish or as a set of dishes to make a set meal. So great that the whole menu was gluten free so that I could share dishes – something I rarely get to do.'

'We chose the 'Fuji' set menu. As I'm allergic to a couple of types of nuts, one of the dishes was adjusted to remove hazelnuts and this was no trouble whatsoever. I asked how the nuts were stored in the kitchen: in a sealed box, on its own shelf. I felt very confident that they could manage any allergy.'

'We had one main person who looked after us during the meal but a number of other staff members dropped by the table to check how things were, including the manager. Each of these people were aware that I was both coeliac and had a nut allergy. Very impressive.'

'The food was absolutely excellent – indeed, this is a seriously exciting place to eat thanks to an amazing menu and wonderful flavours. From the high quality ingredients in the dishes, to the combinations of ingredients, textures and flavours within each of the dishes. All were simply fantastic.'

'I loved all of the dishes we tried within the set meal but to give a flavour of what we enjoyed, I would highlight the Nikkei tempura fish and chips (because it's so difficult to find gluten free batter this one was light, crisp, so delicious) and this was served with cassava fries and wasabi mayo. I LOVED the cassava fries and the way a traditional fish and chip dish was given a Japanese / Peruvian twist. My husband's favourite dish was the braised sticky short rib of beef served with quinoa lime picante. Again, the combination of ingredients and flavours was something totally special. The beef was melt in the mouth.'

'This is a truly wonderful restaurant to enjoy dinner (and cocktails) with friends over some unusual dishes which all happen to be gluten free. As a nut allergic coeliac I felt both loved and wanted! All of the staff we were served by or spoke to were, without exception, friendly (without being overbearing) and highly efficient. Incredible food in a fabulous environment...'
